Tasting Notes
These notes summarize Japanese retailer Enokishouten and whisky publication Dear WHISKY on the standard 40% expression. Their articles feature 700ml bottles; this listing is the 1L format, and the notes are a style guide rather than a tasting of this specific bottle.
- Nose: Fresh fruit and toasted cereal, with a bread-like sweetness and a little peat smoke.
- Palate: Apple and grape-like fruit, balancing sweetness with a tart edge, an oily texture and light smoke.
- Finish: Enokishouten describes lingering fresh fruit and sweetness.
The Story Behind the Two Terriers
The name grew from the original whisky's dark bottle and white label. The familiar pair of dogs is a black Scottish Terrier and a white West Highland White Terrier. Brand history connects the design with James Buchanan's fondness for animals, giving the whisky a recognisable identity that continues on this bottle's label.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Black & White a single malt whisky?
No. It is a blended Scotch combining malt and grain whiskies. James Buchanan & Co. is the company named on the label, not the name of a single distillery.
What size and strength is this bottle?
This listing is for 1 litre, equivalent to 1000ml, at 40% ABV. It is not the 700ml format often shown in Japanese reviews.
Does Black & White have an age statement?
This standard expression carries no age statement. No specific maturation period or vintage is claimed for this bottle.
Is Black & White smoky?
The brand describes a light, fresh and spicy blend with a hint of smoke. Japanese tasting sources also note gentle peat or smoke alongside fruit and cereal.
How can I serve Black & White?
The brand suggests enjoying it neat, over ice or with chilled soda. For a simple highball, add whisky and ice to a tall glass, top with soda and adjust the ratio to your preference.
