ORI-GiN 1848 Tropical & Rich
Made by Mizuho Shuzo in Shuri, Okinawa, ORI-GiN 1848 brings an awamori base together with ten botanicals. Tasting Notes
Mizuho describes a rich, tropical style with clear juniper and botanical character. The notes below paraphrase the IWSC's 2022 assessment of this expression; they are not our own tasting or a guarantee for the photographed batch.
- Nose: Juniper with delicate rice, flower and almond nuances.
- Palate: A smooth, silky texture with a ripe, bruised-apple impression.
- Finish: The cited assessment does not provide a separate finish description.
Okinawan Ingredients, Five Distillates
The base awamori uses yeast isolated from cherry blossoms in Motobu, Okinawa. Rather than distilling all botanicals together, Mizuho separates their extraction and distillation to make five component spirits, then blends them. The ten botanicals listed by Japanese retailer LIQUID are juniper, peach pineapple, coriander seed, lemongrass, shell ginger leaf, long pepper, shikuwasa, ginger, black tea and yerba buena.
Mizuho's official product page records an IWSC silver medal in 2021 and bronze in 2019. These are historical awards for the expression. Explore more styles in our gin collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 1848 mean?
It refers to Mizuho Shuzo's founding year, not the age or bottling year of this gin.
Is this the Honey Blend or Strawberry edition?
No. The pictured front label identifies the Tropical & Rich expression. Honey Blend, Strawberry and DistiRally NEXT are separate releases.
What is the role of sakura yeast?
It is used to ferment the awamori base. This does not mean the gin is matured in cherry-wood casks.
Are a gift box and a specific batch guaranteed?
Contact us to confirm packaging and the batch currently available. The rear-label photograph shows batch 07, but photographs alone do not guarantee the batch supplied.
