Inspired by Whisky Discovered Beneath Antarctic Ice
The brand traces its inspiration to Mackinlay's whisky taken on the Nimrod expedition. Three cases were discovered beneath Shackleton's Cape Royds base in 2007. Richard Paterson's work analysing and recreating that historic whisky informed this modern blend. This is a contemporary bottling inspired by that discovery, not whisky recovered from Antarctica.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shackleton a single malt?
No. The label identifies it as blended malt Scotch whisky: malt whiskies from more than one distillery brought together in a blend.
Is this the whisky recovered from the Antarctic expedition?
No. This is the modern Shackleton blended malt inspired by the historic whisky. The expedition story does not mean this bottle contains century-old whisky.
Is Shackleton smoky?
World Liquor Brutus describes dry smoke on the nose and a gently smoky finish, balanced by fruit, vanilla and honey notes.
What size and ABV is this bottle?
This is the 700 mL bottle at 40% ABV, also shown as 70 cl and 40% vol. on the label.
How can I serve it?
The brand presents Shackleton as a whisky to enjoy over ice. You can also begin with a small neat pour and adjust with water to taste.
