Tasting Notes
These notes summarize Japanese retailer Sake no Yamaichi's description, rather than an in-house tasting.
- Nose: Juniper and fresh grapefruit lead the aromatic profile.
- Palate: Citrus character develops into a softer, orange-like sweetness.
- Finish: Coriander and cinnamon bring a spicy closing impression.
Tea Inspiration and Natural Indigo Colour
The recipe draws inspiration from the Fairmont Empress Hotel's tea tradition. Alongside black tea, butterfly pea blossom contributes earthy herbal character and the distinctive colour. The producer uses copper-pot distillation and adds the blossoms after distillation.
Depending on the mixer, the indigo shade can shift toward lavender, pink or fuchsia. This makes the gin an expressive choice for cocktails, including a gin and tonic. Compare other botanical styles in our gin collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Empress Indigo Gin blue?
Its colour comes from butterfly pea blossoms. The producer states that no artificial colours are used.
Does the colour change when mixed?
Yes. Tonic or citrus can change its appearance, with the final shade depending on the mixer and proportions.
What size and strength is this bottle?
This is the Indigo Gin expression in a 750ml bottle at 42.5% ABV, also marked as 85 proof.
How should I store Empress Indigo Gin?
The producer recommends a cool, dark place because sunlight accelerates fading of the natural colour. Its guidance is to enjoy the bottle within a year of purchase for the best colour presentation.
How can I serve it, and is a box included?
Try it with tonic over ice, or with a citrus garnish according to your preference. This listing is for the bottle without a box.
Will I need to pay import duties or taxes?

Applicable customs duties, import taxes and local fees are paid by the customer and are excluded from the product price and shipping cost.
